Where to Stay in Bangkok for Nightlife: Areas Compared
Short answer: stay in Sukhumvit, between BTS Nana and BTS Asok, if you want Bangkok nightlife within walking distance. That stretch puts rooftops, street level bars, speakeasies and late clubs inside a fifteen minute walk of each other. Thonglor suits a later, slower night, Silom suits variety, and Khao San suits a budget and a taxi ride.
Most people book a hotel in Bangkok long before they have any idea where the night actually happens. Then they spend the trip in traffic, watching a meter, arriving somewhere half an hour after the mood had passed.
Where you sleep shapes how your night ends more than which bar you pick. Here is how the main districts compare, and who each one is genuinely for.

Sukhumvit: Nana, Asok and Soi 11
If you read one line of this guide, read this one. Sukhumvit between Nana and Asok is the part of Bangkok where the night is dense enough to walk.
Soi 11 alone runs from rooftop bars down to street level spots and late clubs along a single road. You can change the whole character of your evening by walking two hundred metres, which is not true anywhere else in the city.
Hotels here run from hostel dorms to towers, and the BTS sits directly overhead. For a first trip to Bangkok, this is the answer that gives you the fewest regrets.
Street level matters as much as the skyline
Rooftops photograph well. They are also the part of the night people tend to remember least, because everyone is quiet and looking outward.
The Sukhumvit nights that land are the ones that mix a rooftop with somewhere at street level, where you are shoulder to shoulder and actually talking to people. Local spots pouring yadong, the Thai herbal liquor, sit a few minutes from the towers.

Thonglor and Ekkamai
Two BTS stops east and the crowd changes. Thonglor and Ekkamai run on cocktail bars and design led rooms, with a Thai and expat crowd rather than a tourist one.
Nights start later here, often after 22:00. That is useful if you are staying a week. It is a problem if you have one evening and an early flight.
The catch is distance. You will taxi in and taxi out, and the trains stop before most people here are ready to leave.
Silom and Sathorn
Silom holds two nights in the same few streets. Rooftop bars and hotel lounges on one side, Soi 4 and Patpong running loud and late on the other.
It is served by both BTS and MRT, which matters more here than in Sukhumvit because the district thins out on weeknights when the offices empty.
A good choice if you want variety without committing to one crowd. A weaker one if you want everything inside a five minute walk.
Khao San and the Old City
Khao San is cheap, loud and worth one night of anyone's trip. It is also thirty to forty minutes by car from Sukhumvit, with no late train to fall back on.

How to judge a hotel's location before you book
Walk time to a BTS or MRT station. Under five minutes. Any more and you are in a taxi by default, every single night.
What sits on the street below. A tower ringed by offices is a very different night from a tower on a bar soi.
Which side of the main road you are on. Crossing Sukhumvit Road on foot at night takes longer than the map suggests. Look for the skywalk.
How the night ends, not how it starts. Work out the ride home from the last venue, not from the hotel lobby.

Is it safe to walk around Sukhumvit at night?
The main roads and bar sois stay busy and well lit until late, and ordinary city sense covers most of it. Keep to the main streets, use the skywalk to cross Sukhumvit Road, and agree how you are getting home before you need to.
