The Bangkok dress code in one line
Smart casual, and the bar is lower than it sounds. Nobody is asking for a jacket or a tie.

Bangkok is humid, so linen, light cotton and short-sleeved button-downs are all fine. It is the shape of the outfit that matters, not the weight of the fabric.

Levels Sky Club on Soi 11 publishes it plainly: no shorts, no flip flops or open-toe shoes, no hoodies, no vests, no caps, no sportswear.
Above Eleven, the rooftop on the same soi, runs a similar line. Sandals, flip flops and sleeveless tops on men are refused, and large backpacks are not welcome either.
Door teams also turn back ripped clothing and anything that reads as beachwear. If you have arrived in Bangkok straight from an island, this is the thing to plan around.
The decision takes about two seconds and there is no appeal. Nobody is being difficult; the venues simply set a look and hold it.
Rooftops, local bars and clubs want different things

Street-level bars and Yadong stalls are the loose end. Nothing is checked, and this is where the night gets comfortable again.
Sky clubs sit in the middle on paper but enforce hardest in practice, because the queue is long and the call is quick. Dress for the club and every other stop is already covered.
Dressing for the heat and the full night
You will move between street heat, a lift, hard air conditioning and back outside several times. Layers are less useful here than one breathable outfit that holds its shape.
Closed shoes are the non-negotiable, so pick a pair you can stand and walk in for five hours. Clean trainers pass at most Sukhumvit venues. Beaten-up ones are a coin toss.
Carry as little as you can. Backpacks are refused at some rooftops and there is nowhere sensible to put one down. If you are planning your own route through the bars on Sukhumvit Soi 11, travel light and you will move faster.
